WEEL Bowls League 2020 and COVID-19

Following the recent decisions made by EIBA, Bowls England and by Bowls Essex we have guidance and we have come to a difficult decision regarding this season’s WEEL league

Whilst it is possible that we may salvage some of this season’s bowling, it is clear that we will be unable to complete the full program as published previously,  so the committee have decided to abandon the 2020 league programme and play-offs altogether

We did consider playing a shortened version of the competition but could see no fair way to allow clubs to have an equal number of home/away fixtures and as all clubs rely home games for revenue, via bar takings, green fees, etc we felt this was important

Also, fewer fixtures would mean less chance for monies to be made via the £2 per point awards

In order to save money on postage, we would rather not refund entry fees, if at all possible and so we would like to keep this years entry fees in our account to be used for next years entries

Of course, if your club feels that they would like a refund, please contact Dave Jarrold directly by email (davejarrold@msn.com) and he will facilitate your refund via a bank transfer as our account is still paper driven and we don’t want to issue cheques, because we don’t want you to visit a branch

We have spoken with our sponsors and they have agreed with our decision. We have been asked  to pass on the good wishes of Graham and the rest of the Cribbs family. Their message is ‘Be safe and we’ll see you in 2021’

In closing, we do have one thought

When this ‘madness’ has come to an end and we are allowed to resume playing bowls, might we suggest that you use the league fixture lists (which are no doubt in your own fixture books) to have friendly matches with your opponents as per the league schedule.

Have a friendly game of bowls, a cup of tea or a few drinks and a bit of fun, because by the time we do get to play, we will ALL need it!
